§ 10-2. Definitions.

  • Admission fee. Any amount charged for entrance to the premises where an amateur boxing event is being held. For the purposes of this article, the term "admission fee" shall not include membership fees charged by health clubs, fitness facilities, gymnasiums, or fees charged for professional instruction in the sports of boxing, kickboxing, and the mixed martial arts.

    Amateur. Any contestant who is not a professional as defined in F.S. § 548.002.

    Contestant. Any person who competes in any boxing, kickboxing, or mixed martial arts match or exhibition.

    County Administrator. The Sarasota County Administrator or his duly authorized representative.

    Match. Contest, bout or competition that involves the sports of boxing, kickboxing, or mixed martial arts in which the participants strive earnestly to win.

    Exhibition. A boxing, kickboxing, or mixed martial arts engagement in which the participants show or display their skills without necessarily striving to win.

    Boxing. To compete with the fists.

    Kickboxing. To compete with the fists, feet, legs, or any combination thereof.

    Licensed physician. A medical doctor (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) licensed to practice medicine in the State of Florida.

    Mixed martial arts. Unarmed combat involving the use, subject to any applicable limitations set forth in F.S. ch. 548 of a combination of techniques from different disciplines of the martial arts, including, but not limited to, grappling, kicking, and striking.

    Promoter. Any person, firm, or organization responsible for the coordinating the match or exhibition.

    Sanctioning body. An organization approved by the County Administrator or designee as a body authorized to sanction boxing, kickboxing, or mixed martial arts matches or exhibitions in Sarasota County.
